Bundles of Energy

PV Sunday 12th November 4-6pm, tea and cake from 4pm, Q&A with Hans Stofer at 5pm.

“For the last six years I commuted in blocks between London and Halle Saale in Germany for work. When I stayed in Halle my simple flat replaced my studio in London. For practical reasons I used materials and objects that I found in my immediate environment. Bundles of Energy are some of the results from this time of living and working between places”.

Bundles of Energy builds on the ideas and concepts of string work made for the 2014 exhibition String Theory at Gallery SO in London. Whilst String Theory focused mainly on objects, the vocabulary of Bundles of Energy tests the notion of the possibilities of string pictures, books and wearables.

In some ways these Bundles of Energy provide order to a tumultuous life. They are strung together information, like bundles of newspapers that you leave outside the house ready to be carried off.

Hans Stofer was born in Switzerland, and trained as a precision engineer at Brown Boveri Technical College in Baden. He later completed an MA in Jewellery and Objects at the Zurich School of Art and Design.

In 1987 he emigrated to London where following a stint as technician in the Jewellery and Metal department at the Royal College of Art, he started to teach part-time at Camberwell College of Art (UAL), in the Silversmithing and Metalwork department. He went on to be appointed Professor in the Jewellery and Metal department at the Royal College of Art and continued to exhibit my in the UK and abroad. For the last six years he has been Professor in Jewellery and Objects at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle, Germany.

On 30 September 2023, he left education to focus entirely on his own work. Bundles of Energy is Hans Stofer’s first show since moving back permanently to London.
